What is America one encounters and studies in a postmodern age? Is it a discourse? A bounded collective identity or a set of manifold, changing, and contingent identities? A fiction? An idea? A history? A place? If place has its say, are we talking about a nation, or several nations within a nation? And who are ‘Americans’? What do they share in common, what is their ‘American-ness’?

THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE WILLIAMS CLAN

1. What do you see in them?

2. Taking into account the auto/biographical reflection present in the play, do you see it from the photos? Do the photos 'help' ellucidate the Wingfield clan?

1. I see three people, one of which is a male, two are female.

2. The picture of Edwina Williams reminds me of an old lady with a young spirit. Tenesse Williams reminds me of a Chicago mafia employee, the one responsible for taking care of debts. He doesn't look the way I pictured Tom. His serious face, suit, and cigarette, his mafia appeal make him a cold-bloded man. Certainly not what Tom is. Rose Williams is kind of beautiful and attracting on the picture, I imagined her to be more crippled, even in her face at which you can see her internal conflicts and sufferings.

The photos do 'help' ellucidate the Wingfield clan. Why? Because the play is based on this clan, the pictures are of the characters within the play, their alter egos. So eventhough I might not see them as the characters they represent, that's what they are, and I can live with it :--)

1. What do I see in them? In Tennessee Williams, I see an artist. It is probably his look and his moustaches that signal that kind of an appearance. In Edwina Williams, I see a frustrated old woman. It is probably her "fake" smile that makes me feel that way. Finally, in Rose Williams, I see a weak woman.

2. When I saw the photos of Tennessee Williams, his mother, and his daughter for the first time, I was surprised and fascinated by the fact that his sister Rose Williams looks nearly the same way as I imagined her. The two things that I imagined that are most obvious in her appearance are her curly hair and the sense of weakness that can be seen from her face. I don't know why she seems to me so weak. It's her half-closed eyes and indifferent smile that probably signal that aura of weakness around her.

Furthermore, the mother, Edwina Williams, has the look of a woman that could be easily labeled "old witch". Her sinister look is the result of her "fake" smile and the glasses she wears. I think that her smile is "fake" because she doesn't appeal to me as a woman who has a sense of humor. Moreover, the glasses produce a "sinister" look because of the many curves that give a more youthful look to her face. In my opinion, a woman of her age should wear ordinary circular glasses.

As far as Tom's look is concerned, I never imagined him the way Tennessee Williams looks. In my opinion, Tennessee Williams has the appearance of an artist. However, despite the poetry he writes, I never imagined Tom as a man with an appearance of an artist. The only trait on the face that fits in my own imagination of how Tom looks are the moustaches.

1.A disfunctional family that is missing the old father figure.

2.I see Tom in Tenessee Williams' picture, a thinker/dreamer and a smoker.I can identify Amanda in Tenessee's mother, a worried and caring mother. And finally Laura's character can be matched with Tenessee's sister Rose which in the picture seems fragile and distant. The pictures do help identify the Wingfield clan within the Williams family due to the great simularities between the characters and the Williams family

In my opinion these photos do not help to ellucidate the Wingfield clan. This is because we can not see their inner fellings and thoughts we just see them as who they are in person. We can only see how they really might look in person. We can't relate the Wingfield clan with the Williams clan only by photos eventhough people say that this play represents Tennessee Williams autobiography.

In the photographs I see a family which is not complete (the father figure is not present). I also think they don't have any strong relationship and they look really distant.
I think that Laura is a good representation of Rose Williams. On the photo she looks fregile with a look in which I see insecurity. Edwina Williams seems as if she sees others from above, as if she is the boss in the family. And Tennessee Williams seems as if he doesn't care abouth anything and he is just tired of fullfiling someone else's wishes and demands. So, yes, I think the photos ellucidate the Wingfield clan. I can see the play as a reflection of these photos.

1. I see a family without a father figure. Probably the man (Tennesee) is the one that is providing the economical support for the family, because the old female character (the mom) is I think too old to work something that will be enough to support the family economicaly. The other female looks too fragile, too be doing any work, so if she is doing something she is probably a secretary or something like that.

2. Well, yes in a way. Come to think of that They look exactly the way I imagined the characters from the play.

when looking at the photo a see a family of three. Although both of the families, Williams and Wingfield, have the same number of family members there is a slight difference between them, the mother's age. In Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" the character of the mother is quite young, unlike Tennessee's mother who is at least 65 years old. On the other hand these two families are also similar. What makes them almost the same is the family structure which is a mother, a son, and a young daughter.

In the three photos i see three people from the american south. Edwina looks just like Bonnie Clutter ("In Cold Blood")The fragility of Rose is obvious, while Tennessee is an embodiment of The South. Of course these conclusions are based just on physical appearance.

The reflection with the Wingfields is there, but i cannot fully connect, since the Williams look as if they are not in the same social class with the Wingfileds.
