What is America one encounters and studies in a postmodern age? Is it a discourse? A bounded collective identity or a set of manifold, changing, and contingent identities? A fiction? An idea? A history? A place? If place has its say, are we talking about a nation, or several nations within a nation? And who are ‘Americans’? What do they share in common, what is their ‘American-ness’?

Step One - Innocent Erendira

Look at the notes from class - then proceed to answer the following questions -

1. According to your findings, what are the KEY supernatural events (actions) in the first half of the novel? How so?

2. Then, of you have to single out (choose) ONE of these supernatural events, which one would it be?

3. The one that you singled out, describe how it influences the way you view the characters and the setting? What does it take out? What does it add?

The key supernatural event in the story is the coming of the wind of misfortune. The atmosphere created by this reoccuring event affects the setting and the characters by changing the way I (the reader) treat the story. With the mentioning of this wind of misfortune, i start to treat the story as completely made up. This means that while reading the story i cannot symphatise with the characters and i cannot believe that such a mansion in the middle of the desert exist. The only statement that i can derive from Marquez's weird story is that the author had a rich imagination.

Some of the supernatural events are:
- The "wind of misfortune"
- The clocks of unthinkable sizes and shapes
- Erendira's ability to sleep and work at the same time

I choose to single out the "wind of misfortune." To me, this represents the concept of fate. It adds suspense to the novella as well as sympathy. The reader feels sorry that Erendira's life is not in her control yet at the same time, they are eager to see what the next unfortunate event will be. It takes away a growing anger some readers might have. As a reader, you get upset at Erendira for not trying to escape or to stand up for herself but if her life is already controlled by fate, then it's not really her choice.

1) In the first half of the novel, the key supernatural events would have to be :

-Ulises as the heavenly figure

-The clocks

-Erendira as a workaholic

2) If I were to single out one of these events it would definitely be Ulises.

3) I choose Ulises as the supernatural event because of several reasons:

Ulises can be looked at in two ways
-As a normal person
-As this heavenly figure which possesses a super-beauty and shines with amazement.

With Ulises, I can easily observe how "Innocent Erendira" changes throughout the story. I think Ulises adds the feeling of love and sensations in the story along with Erendira. She has never loved nor has been loved before. With the addition and presence of Ulises, the plot totally changes.

Based on the "Magical Realism" backround of this story there are many supernatural elements such as:

-The grandmother's supernatural influence to Erendira

-The grandmother does not die after she consumed the poison cookie

I choose the grandmother's supernatural influence to Erendira. Throughout the whole story Erendira's life is 'regulated' by her grandmother. While i was reading the story it made me visualize a very bad society who abused Erendira's life because of her grandmother's supernatural influence over her. By the way i don't think that this is the way Erendira had to pay for her 'mistake'

The supernatural events from the first part of "Innocent Erendira" are the wind of misfortune, the clocks of unthinkable sizes and shapes that Erendira has to wind every single day. Erendira's heartless grandmother is supernatural because she doesn't die after eating rat poison. The description of her appearance and size makes her a supernatural character. Ulises, the man that Erendira meets, is also supernatural. He has the ability to change the color of liquids and he is so beautiful that he looks like and angel withought wings. Erendira her self also has a supernatural ability, she can sleep and work at the same time.
Of all these supernatural events i choose the wind of misfortune. The wind influences mostly the setting. It burns down the house which is the primary setting of the novella. It forces Erendira and her grandmother to move, which means that the setting changes. Because of the wind of misfortune, Erendira has to start her life as a wandering prostitute so she can raise the money to pay her grandmother back for the house. The wind is actually the reason for the events after the fire. If it wasn't for the wind, the storyline would have been completely different.

The key supernatural elements in this story are:

*The wind of misfortune (bad things follow)
*The grandmother's oily blood (shiny and green)
*Working in her sleep (Erendira)
*The clocks (that take 6 hours to wind)
*The poisonous cake (the grandmother doesn't die after eating it)

These 3 supernatural elements are key in the sense that some of the story's main points are: work, (chores and sexual enslavement) evil (power), bad fortune, etc.

If i had to single out one of these elements, it would be the grandmother's oily green blood.
The green blood influences the way i see the grandmother by portraying her as evil. Her evil acts throughout the story on Erendira: sexual enslavement, chores, tying a chain to her foot, etc. show her as an evil and controlling woman. The blood adds to the suspense and the 'color of evil';yet, we the readers already know what type of woman she is and her cruel acts.

There are some of supernatural examples in the story. They are linked with the characters and the setting. Like the wind of misfortune brings bad luck to Erendira. It is supernatural in the way that brings something that is not coherent. It is liked to the setting because the events that happen take place at a certain place at a certain time. As is the case with the wind, it destroys the grandmother's house and brings bad luck to her, and that leads her to use her grandoughter as a tool in the street!

1) The key supernatural events in "Innocent Enrendira" are:
The wind of misfortution,
Enrdira working in her sleep,
and that the grandmother doesn't die from the poison or the bomb.
2)The supernatural event, I would selected is, that Enrendira works in her sleep.
3) The reason why i chose this supernatural event is because if Enrendira wasn't such a workacholic and actully refused to do some of the things her grandmother asked her to do such being forced in to prositition, then we (The reader)would have a very different story. All and all this supernatural event that Erendira can work in her sleep is a symbol as to why certain thing happan to her, such as being forced in to prositition.

the key supernatural elements are:
-the menshion
-the clocks
-the photographer with his bike
-the grandmother giving orders in her sleep
-the power of ulises to change the color
-the dimonds in the oranges

Iwould choose the grandmother that gives orders even when she sleeps.i think that this supernatural element influences the view that we form for the grandmother.this supernatural characteristic that she has shows how evil she is and
that she has no consideration at all for erendira.if it was possible she would spent her whole life giving ordes to Erendira

The key supernatural elements are:
-Erendira's abilyty to work and sleep at same time.
-Ulisles' power to change the colour of the glasses
-The grandmother doesn't die after eating poisonous food
-Grandmother's green blood
From the supernatural elements that I listed, I pick the grandmother's green blood.
Granmother's green blood is closely connected with her character. When Ulisles kills the grandmother tons of green blood goes out of her and complitely cover Ulisles. That's like the whole evel tha was inside her went out(finaly). The green blood comes at the end of the story and completes the pictyre of the evel woman.

Grandmas ability to have premonitions is key to the setting because she is able to track Erendira when she is on the run with her boyfriend Ulises. Also she contributes to the character of Erendira because we find out that she hates her grandmother because of her special ability

In "Innocent Erendira", the key supernatural elements are the oranges, Ulises's ability to change produce vivid lights when he comes in contact with glass, Ulises's ability to hear Erendira's calling and the grandmother's green blood. I wouldn't put the failed attempts to kill the grandmother, because the grandmother's survival may be coincidental.
If one of the supernatural elements had to be accented, Ulises's ability to apply vivid light to the glasses would be crucial for driving the plot. This supernatural event stresses the hybridity of Ulises and hints on the presence of the classic "pure-at-heart" hero; an idea which ends up being shattered, ergo the intriguing nature of the story.

1. My opinion is that the supernatural elements in the story are:
-Erendira working in her sleep
-"clocks of unthinkable sizes and shapes"
-"Wind of Misfortune"
-Ulises the grandson of an angel

2.If I had to single out one of these supernatural elements I would single out clocks of unthinkable sizes and shapes.

3.This description of the clocks gives you an idea of the way of life for Erendira and where she lives, also of how it is a prison of time and she cant escape the time. Its natural because they are clocks yet supernatural because it points out that there are unthinkable sizes and shapes. They also give a sort of unsettling feeling about the house. The clocks give a foreshadow of how the grandmother controls Erendira's time and how she cant escape. It also gives you the feeling of horror and captivity, it makes you feel sorry for Erendira. This all brings forth the element of supernatural effect to the story and yet a description of the house.
